Consider the following points in your selection of the six secondary schools:
1) Aggregate Score & Cut-off Points (MOST IMPT)
Your aggregate score meets the sec schs' cut-off points in 2009 sec one intake. Though these cut-off points may fluctuate from year to year, it is best to choose only those within your reach.
Example
Being one of the most sought-after sec sch in AMK, Anderson Sec has enjoyed the high cut-off points of 248-250 these past few years. 249 in Yr2008 and 248 in Yr2009, it is very unlikely that the sch will allow the cut-off points to continue to fall.
If your result is 246/247, u should opt for another sch instead, to avoid the unnecessary disappointment come 22 Dec. U are not buying 4D or Toto anyway, so don't bother to try your luck. =)
This golden rule applies to all other schools. In 2007, I have only one pupil who failed to secure any sec sch of his choice as a result of his non-compliance with this rule. He stays in AMK, and u know where he goes to. =O
2) Distance of sec sch from home
Next year, u will spend a great deal of your time in sch, more than that in pri sch. It is only wise to choose a sec sch near your home to reduce the fatigue and waste of time travelling to & fro.
Recommended time is not more than 45 minutes for a one-way trip. Can u imagine spending 1h 30mins on the road every day? I could have spent those time to catch a nap, so that I can do better in my work. =D
3) School Culture & Environment
There are way too much distractions when u enter the adolescent stage, with Boy-Girl Relationship (BGR) being the greatest pitfall, followed by some other teenage problems associated with ego and pride, which may affect your concentration.
Hence, a good conducive learning environment is important. Nothing beats a good education in Singapore. =) It doesn't matter if u can't see my point now. Mark this blog entry & read them again ten years from now. =D
4) Others
I graduated from Mayflower Sec in 1994, a year after my elder brother from the same sch. It is defintely a bonus to have someone whom u know, and especially if that someone is a good role-model for u to follow.
I'll post again if more things cross my mind. Meanwhile, good luck to all! Be wise in your selection! =D
