Path to Achieving Goal

I am pleased to announce that this year's PSLE Mathematics and Science papers are on seperate weeks.

Mathematics Papers are on 8 Oct 2009, Thursday, whereas Science Paper is on 12 Oct 2009, Monday. This means that u can now concentrate on "subduing" them, one on each week, with the weekends for u to revise your Science & HMT, if applicable.

So does that mean I'll have more A*s in Mathematics & Science? =D

Term 2 Week 1: Earth Hour

The term break may be over, but fret not, another is on its way! =D Hope you had a restful time last week.

For this week's journal writing, I would like you to reflect on a coming global event : Earth Hour. This year, Singapore is participating in this global effort to combat climate change.

To help you with the reflection, I have listed some questions below:

1. What is Earth Hour?
2. When is it held this year?
3. Why do you think people are organising this event?
4. Will u join in this global effort? What will u be doing during Earth Hour?
5. What activities can you organise with your family and friends during Earth Hour?
6. What are the problems & threats that the Earth is facing?
7. Could you propose some solutions to ONE of the problems which you have highlighted?

Wishing you a pleasant reflection. (",)

My New Toy =D

A Nikon D60 DSLR camera! (",)
(Photo taken using my 4-year-old Sony T-10 CyberShot)

After much deliberation between the two big names in digital photography, Nikon and Canon, I have finally decided on this entry-level Nikon D60 DSLR over its closest arch-rival Canon EOS 450D DSLR. =D

Nikon D60 has a better ergonomic feel & fit when I held it in my hands, though Canon 450D boasts better specs. The difference is nevertheless even out with a more affordable price in the former. (",)

I hereby announce that photo-taking is compulsory in all school/class excursions/outings*. =D

P.S. * Anyway, it has all along been compulsory. =D

Discover the Champion in You

We're the champions. (",)

Who will be the last man standing?

Do u have a plan?

Everyone wants to go on a holiday. =D

It says, "CHAMP". =)

True champions in the making?

Everyone can succeed. =)

Empowered young minds. =D

Based on my observation, the common characteristics/traits of successful students are:

1) Focused - "I just need to cut out the noises..." - Bryan Wong, 2007
2) Inquisitive - Passion for learning*
3) Responsibility - Take charge of personal success
4) Excellence - Quality work & going the extra mile
5) Self-motivated/disciplined - Flying without a pilot

* PS: I just remembered that Benjamin once asked me where the extra energy is stored in our bodies.

Answer: Carbohydrates are our main source of energy. We derive them from rice, noodles etc. Extra energy (carbohydrates) that is not used is stored as fats in our body. Hence, a person becomes fatter and fatter. =D

Term 1 Week 10: After Class Test 1...

It's over. For Class Test 1, that is. (",)

While some of u may be pleased with your results, others might be somewhat upset over your dismal performance.

Take heart! This is not the actual game yet. The final battle is yet to come. We have approximately 5 months to recuperate and replenish our ammunitions. Let's give our enemies a taste of our prowess! =)

Take this opportunity to reflect and comment on your Class Test 1 results.

1) Are your results close to / far from / meeting your targets? How do u feel now?
2) If u have done well, what factors contributed to the success?
3) How can u maintain or even further improve your performance?
4) If u did not achieve your desired results, what do u think could be the cause(s)? i.e. Test papers too difficult, not spending enough time to revise etc.
5) What are your strategies to overcome these problems?

Your reflections must include all the above points, and any other relevant points.

U may want to talk about your performance as a whole, and for each individual subject.

Hope that things will be better in SA1 in 9 weeks' time! Cheers! =D

Sony Creative Science Award - Technical Workshop

Two very interesting workshops organized for pupils at the Singapore Science Centre by Sony, and in collaboration with MOE & A*STAR.

I am sure Pushpin, Michael, Ramon, Benz, Tino, Shu Xuan, Xin Xian & Peijun had an enjoyable time at these 2 workshops.

They got to see how we could use elastic potential energy of a twisted rubberband to propel a boat, how this energy can also be utilised to caused a rolling bottle to roll back to u. We have also seen how the wheel & axle, and interlocking gears can change the movement of an applied force to make interesting moving toys.

Best of all, we had a 30-minute break at the McDonalds! =D

Hope that we'll have more interesting learning journeys for the next 6 months that u have left in Anderson Pri! =)

Dream Carrier - 23 Feb 2009

Scenario

Everybody has a dream or two.

Some aspire to be a great scientist or astronaut, while some dream of becoming a pilot one day. There are people who yearn to win in the Toto draw, while others just wish to get into the secondary schools of their choice.

Whatever your dream(s) is/are, go after it/them. But wait! The most feared and dreaded Destroyer of the Dream is back to wreck havoc!

Mission

Your task is to protect your dream(s) from the monster and to keep it/them alive.

You are to design a carrier that could carry and protect your dream(s) from the impact of the falls.

Requirements

1) The egg, with your dreams written on it, must remain intact (not broken) when the carrier is dropped from level 2, 3 & 4.
2) The carrier must be easily opened to check on the condition of the egg after every drop.

Congratulations to led by Peijun, and comprised of Trina, Wen Fang & Shernise, for accomplishing the mission and clinching the Overall Best! =D

Special mention to P.P.B. led by Pushpin, and comprised of Chen Keat, Wesley & Davian, for successfully defending their dreams. =D
