Youth Olympic Games 2010

Little Red Dot Singapore has done the impossible by beating the capital city (Moscow) of the world's largest nation, Russia, to host the inaugural* Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in August 2010.

This decision was announced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne, Switzerland on 21 Feb 2008, Thursday, @ 7.15pm (Singapore Time).

As part of our YOG bid, Singapore proposed the Asian Youth Games. This first Asian Youth Games has been scheduled for 2009 and will be used as a test in preparation for the YOG.

Let's hope the YOG in Singapore will be a great success and put us, the little red dot, on the world map! =D

Prefects' Investiture

What makes a good prefect?

This is a simple question with a difficult answer.

Prefects are student leaders and play an important role in the school community. They bear great responsibilities to the school, their peers and their prefectorial team. Although there may not be one single quality or a single combination of qualities that determines a good prefect, there are, in general, some common characteristics that an exemplary prefect exhibits. These are:

Personal behaviour and mannerism
· Dress smartly in his/her uniform
· Show respect for peers and staff
· Work well as a team
· Model good behaviours (Good role model)

Organisational Skills
· Punctual
· Reliable
· Good time management

Personal qualities
· Polite
· Assertive and decisive
· Approachable and understanding
· Self-disciplined
· Ability to differentiate what's right or wrong
· Self-confidence (not arrogance)
· Motivated and enthusiastic
· Integrity
· Adaptable

Everyone possesses different such qualities and it's this difference that determines the success of the team.

A good prefect must have the desire to do the job as many of the duties that the prefects have to do are not necessarily glamorous and take up time. They must also have the energy and enthusiasm, and a willingness to put others before self.

So, do u think u have what it takes to be a good prefect? Step forward if u think u do! =D

Congratulations to Andrea, Lydia, Shernise, Aravind, Yong Le, Vikaesh and Zane for their official appointment as APS prefects for the year 2008! =)

Fortune Plant

Bought this "little fellow" from Chinatown during the CNY festive period in January. It was being sold at 3 for $10, but I decided to buy just one and it cost me $4. The Chinese dislikes the number "4" as it rhymes with the word "dead" in Mandarin and hence, it's inauspicious. Last year, the geomancer said "4" is my lucky number, so I took it nevertheless.

It's supposed to bring in wealth and fortune for the owner, as it signifies prosperity which the stall holder explained.

It was first soaked in water for 4 hours on 30 Jan. As expected, the first sprout emerged on the 3rd day.

Sad to say, not much care was given since and the "hair" was kind of messy now. I wondered if that's the reason for me not striking the Toto in that $10 Million Draw last Thursday... =(

Phases of the Moon & Eclipses

Our second class excursion. This time to the Singapore Science Centre to learn more about phases of the moon and eclipses.

I had expected a more exciting trip, but nevertheless it's worth the effort. Perhaps, we'll also visit the public exhibition halls some other time...

How do u find the trip? Post your comments in the comment column soon!
